Google+ adds photo, video tools to ramp up challenge to FB

 

News:Google aims to revolutionize photography," Google senior vice president Vic Gundotra said while introducing a host of new social networking features at an art gallery in San Francisco.

Photo and video sharing are among prime uses of online social networks. Gundotra said that Google+ users upload about 1.5 billion images weekly.

He also announced that the number of people who use Google's two-year-old social network at least once a month has climbed to 540 million from about 300 million early this year.  

Facebook still dominates the world of online social networking, boasting more than a billion users.
    
Google hoped to bolster the popularity of its social network with the addition of photo and video editing tools that automatically provide users with professional quality images and custom-made movies.

Galaxy S4, S3, Note 2 primed to pair with Samsung's smartwatch

News: Samsung on Monday made it clear that it's readied an Android 4.3 Jelly Bean software update that will let certain US smartphones pair with the company's Galaxy Gear smartwatch. This announcement dovetails with an earlier statement that Samsung would push out the update on a global scale.

The Premium Suite software package will give the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 smartphones the enhancements they need to work with the new smartwatch, a USD 300 accessory which was previously available only with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Owners of the Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 Mini, and Galaxy Mega phones, who also aim at the Gear, need to hold tight: the update for these phones is slated for "the coming months." In addition to Android 4.3 features and Galaxy Gear compatibility, the Premium Suite brings a few Samsung extras to the camera, such as a split-screen mode, and a simplified home screen option.

News: The G Pro Lite was recently also listed in India at Snapdeal at a discounted price of Rs 18,300, which has now been revised to Rs 19,990. The LG G Pro Lite comes with dual-SIM support with dedicated hot key and also bundles a stylus. The LG G Pro Lite features a 5.5-inch IPS display with a qHD resolution of 540x960 pixels. It is powered by a 1GHz dual core MediaTek 6577 processor along with 1GB of RAM. The phablet runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and packs a 3,140mAh removable battery.

Steam now 65 million users strong as Valve makes a push for the living room

News: Valve's Steam service for PC distribution and sales has over 65 million users playing its over 3,000 games, the company announced this afternoon. That's a 30 percent increase (15 million accounts) over the last 12 months -- not too shabby! -- putting the service's userbase well above that of Microsoft's Xbox Live (which has 48 million, according to MS). Not quite the 110 million that belong to Sony's PlayStation Network, but not too shabby.

The new Steam number comes ahead of Valve's planned hardware beta, which intends to test the three main components of the company's big living room push:SteamOS, Steam Controller, and Steam Machines. The first of those components, SteamOS, is a Linux-based navigation solution for gaming PCs in the living room. While in can be installed on any PC (and it's free), it'll come installed on the physical Steam Machines that Valve ships to 300 beta participants (alongside the aforementioned Steam Controller). That said, at 65 million users, you have 0.0005 percent chance of being chosen for the beta. Best of luck with that!

Three to carry iPad Air and new iPad mini in the UK

News: With the iPad Air but a day away from launching in the UK, it's high time that the nation's cellular networks began crowing about which ones will carry the device. Three is the first to pipe up, saying that you'll be able to snag both the Air from tomorrow and the iPad Mini with Retina when it arrives later in November.

The cheapest package will set you back £7.50 a month with 1GB of data on a monthly contract, plus £499 up-front for the 16GB model -- while you can grab 15GB a month if you pony up £25 every four weeks. Don't forget that while you'll initially be stuck with just 3G signals, the network will begin its LTE rollout in December, so factor that in when you make your decision.

Verizon 'Ellipsis' Android tablet and trademark leak out, hint at a new wireless effort

News: Serial product shot leaker @evleaks is showing off pics of a new tablet tonight, tagged as the Verizon Ellipsis 7, 2013. It looks like a standard 7-inch Android tablet, albeit with some overly heavy bezel action, but there's little else to go on regarding where it's from and how it may arrive. The rest of the puzzle may be filled in, however, by a trademark for "Ellipsis" and "Ellipsis 7" that FierceCable dug up just a few days ago, and imagines could cover a new service / device. Filed by Verizon Wireless, the Ellipsis application covers a "wireless telecommunications device featuring transmission of voice, data, image and video", while Ellipsis 7 includes tablet computers and other wireless devices. So now we know what the hardware is called and what it looks like, but what it does is still unclear, although recent Verizon moves like ending its wireless partnership with cable companies, rumors that it will purchase Intel's IPTV technology and the Corvair / FiOS Companion tablet that popped up last year are enough to keep our imaginations humming.

Android KitKat leak suggests big improvements for cheap phones, wearables

News:  When you thought we were ready for Google's next announcement, along comes some fresh information, courtesy of regular Google news-breaker, Amir Efrati. He's apparently taken a look at confidential documents outlining what's going on with the next big mobile OS update. The Android KitKat iteration will apparently tackle that tricky fragmentation issue, and has been designed to work well even on lesser-specced Google-powered handsets. The new Android OS "optimizes memory use in every major component," and will include tools to make memory-friendly apps for "entry-level devices" with memory even as low as 512MB.

The other major point is how Google, a well-known proponent of wearables, is already is prepping for even more smartwatches and visors on its mobile operating system. The new version will reportedly include support for three new sensors: geomagnetic rotation vector, step detection and step counters, which could be Android's way of answering Apple's inclusion of a dedicated motion processor in its latest iPhone. The source reckons these are geared towards Google's rumored smart watch -- or possibly glass. Google is apparently still working on making NFC a bigger deal, and has also worked internally on improving smartphones' skills controlling your TV and other devices. Apparently, this will involve unifying how Android deals with IR blasters, rather than the fragmented approach brought by phone makers including Samsung, LG, Sony and HTC. Bluetooth is also rumored to see significant improvements, with Bluetooth HID over GATT and Message Access Profile both mentioned what Android-running hardware can talk with.

iPhone 5s battery life issue acknowledged by Apple to be affecting few units

 

News:  Apple's new iPhone 5s is courting controversy again, after the company acknowledged that some units of the phone have a manufacturing defect that is leading to the battery draining faster.

The Cupertino giant told the New York Times that a small number of iPhone 5s units have a manufacturing defect which is causing the issue, and that the company will replace these defective units.

"We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5s devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life," Teresa Brewer, an Apple spokeswoman. "We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone." 

Apple has not specified the number of units affected by the issue or the particular batch that's affected.

Lenovo Yoga 8-inch, 10-inch quad-core Android tablets unveiled

 

News: Lenovo has launched two new Android tablets, the Yoga 8-inch and Yoga 10-inch. The Lenovo Yoga 8-inch tablet comes at $249 (Rs. 15,200 approximately) while the Lenovo Yoga 10-inch tablet has been priced at $299 (Rs. 18,300 approximately). The tablets have been launched in the US, and for now, no global availability details have been released.

Both the newly announced tablets sports Lenovo's multimode feature, offering three modes to work - hold, tilt and stand. The tablets also feature cylindrical handles at one end for gripping. The Chinese manufacturer claims that both the tablets can deliver up to 18 hours battery back-up. The Lenovo Yoga 8-inch and 10-inch tablets run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Asus Fonepad 7 voice-calling tablet launched at Rs. 17,499

 

News:  Asus has launched the new version of its Fonepad 7 tablet in India for Rs. 17,499. The tablet, which also comes with voice calling support, will be available starting November.

The new Fonepad 7 was initially announced in September at IFA 2013, Berlin.

The new Asus Fonepad 7 is powered by a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2560 processor alongside 1GB of RAM but retains the same 7-inch 1280x800 display. It comes with dual-front speakers with Asus SonicMaster audio technology.

The new Fonepad 7 is 10.5mm thick and weighs 340g. It packs in a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera, and a 5-megapixel autofocus rear camera with a 100 continuous-shot 'burst' mode and 1080p full-HD video recording, which is a big improvement over its predecessor with the same name.

The new Asus voice-calling tablet comes with a 3950mAh battery that is rated at up to 28 hours of 3G talk time, 35 days of standby time and up to 10 hours of video playback.

Asus Fonepad 7 will be available in 16GB  onboard storage options and a microSDHC card slot for expansion. The tablet comes with 5GB of Asus WebStorage free for lifetime as well the Asus WebStorage Office suite of apps.

Nexus 5 pre-registration page goes live in Canada, confirms specifications

 

News:  It seems Google isn't the only one accidentally listing its upcoming Nexus smartphone online, as a new report reveals that a Canadian mobile carrier put up a page on Facebook for pre-registering the Nexus 5.

As per Android Police Wind Mobile, a Canadian carrier made the Nexus 5 pre-registration page live on Facebook for users to get notified when the device is available, ahead of the official launch, though the pre-registration page did not suggest any details of availability and pricing of the Nexus 5. However, the page has been reportedly taken down after initial reports which say it did reveal a complete specifications list.

We have already seen a number of purported specifications revealed of the upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone, and the latest leak does not add anything new. New leaked specifications are in-line with the earlier leaks and suggest that the Nexus 5 will come with a 4.95-inch full-HD (1080p) IPS LCD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 2GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera with OIS and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. Connectivity options expected in the smartphone are Wi-Fi, NFC (Android Beam), and Bluetooth 4.0, while the device is likely to come in two storage variants 16GB and 32GB. The alleged device has also been expected to include a host of sensors like ambient light, proximity, pressure as well as accelerometer, compass, notification LED and gyroscope.

iPad Air review

News: Remember "thinnovation"? That was Apple's tagline when it first introduced theMacBook Air, a laptop so skinny it could fit in a manila envelope. Six years later, the company did something similar with its tablet lineup by introducing the iPad Air. As its name suggests, the Air comes with a revamped design that sheds almost half a pound of weight, along with a couple millimeters of thickness and a significant amount of bezel area. At the same time, it maintains the same 9.7-inch Retina display that defined the last two iPads. While that's impressive enough in its own right, Apple also managed to make the device more powerful, thanks to the same A7 chip that already powers the iPhone 5s.

The one part of the iPad Air that isn't any thinner or lighter is its price, which starts at the usual $499 for a 16GB WiFi-only model. From there, the MSRP goes as high as $929 for the most expensive configuration (that's the WiFi + Cellular model with 128 gigs of storage). As always, the Air is entering a highly competitive market just in time for the holidays. So will its strong performance and super-thin frame be enough to make you upgrade come November 1st? Lenovo's 'Yoga' Android tablet has a built-in kickstand containing an 18-hour battery

News:  What does Ashton Kutcher have to do with a couple of Android tablets? We don't know either. What we do know is that Lenovo just announced a highly unusual device, and it's unique enough that Lenovo would have had our attention even ifdidn't use the "Jobs" actor as a spokesperson. What you see above is the previously leaked Yoga Tablet, which has a built-in kickstand that also houses a humongous cylindrical battery (one capable of lasting 18 hours, according to Lenovo). A little more memorable than Lenovo's previous Android tablets, wouldn't you say?

True to its name (it's named after Lenovo's convertible Yoga PCs), the screen can fold over, though it's not quite as flexible as the original. All told, it can rotate 135 degrees, allowing for three different usage modes. As you'd expect, you can use it as a traditional tablet with the kickstand closed ("Read mode") or you can open the kickstand so that the tablet's propped up on its own (that'd be "Stand mode"). But there's also "Tilt mode," which involves laying the tablet face-up with the cylindrical battery keeping the device slightly propped up, allowing for easier on-screen typing.

Samsung Galaxy Round hands on

News:  Following the recent launch of Samsung's Korea-only Galaxy Round, it was only a matter of time before this eccentric concave phone made its way to specialist stores in Hong Kong. Tofu-keitai is one of the few shops that are offering said product inSincere Podium (where the going rate is above $850 to capitalize on early adopters), and our contacts there were kind enough to let us play with one briefly.

As you can deduce from the appearance and specs, the Snapdragon 800-powered Galaxy Round looks and feels just like a Galaxy Note 3 that you accidentally sat on. Even the plastic back cover channels the same stitched leather look, and underneath it you get the usual microSD slot plus a removable battery, albeit with a slightly smaller capacity -- 10.64Wh instead of 12.16Wh. Other notable differences include the lack of stylus and grip grooves on the faux metallic frame.

Nexus 5 leaked in dual-tone White-variant, tipped for November 1 launch

 

News: We have already seen a number of purported images of the upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone, but this time the infamous phone tipster, @evleaks has revealed the device in its alleged White colour variant. However, there is no word whether the leaked image is an official render, but smartphone it looks a lot like the device seen in leaks in the past, as well as the smartphone seen in the 'official' accidental listing of the $349 16GB Nexus 5 on the Google Play store. Importantly, the leak also indicates a November 1 launch date, though till now, no official event has been scheduled for the unveiling.

The tipster has posted the press render on Twitter and reveals a two-tone White colour variant with a black front panel and a white rear panel. Further, the render shows a homescreen which houses apps for camera, Chrome, hangout, dialer, Play Store and Google's Hub that houses usual Google apps like Gmail, Google Photos, Google+ among others. The tweet reads, "In white. 11/1.".

Rumoured specifications of the Nexus 5 include a 4.95-inch full-HD (1080p) IPS LCD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 2GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera with OIS and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. Micromax Canvas Tab P650 review

 

News: One of the most remarkable trends in the Indian tablet industry over the past year has been the rise of the budget segment of tablets. Micromax is one of the major players in this segment, and can take credit for kick-starting the demand in this segment with its Funbook tablet, which claimed to combine entertainment with education. 

Micromax's Canvas Tab P650 is a tablet with 8-inch display, a segment which has been dominated by Apple and Samsung for quite some time now. But can the Micromax Canvas Tab, the company's first 8-inch tablet and also the first flagship tablet in the Canvas series, repeat the success of the first Funbook, and get ahead of the competition? We try to find out in our review.

Design/ Build
The Micromax Canvas Tab is built along the lines of Micromax's high-end smartphones, like the Canvas Doodle 2. On first look, the Canvas Tab looks like a stretched out or bigger version of the Funbook tablet. However, that is only the case for the front panel of the tablet.

The front of the Canvas Tab features a broad bezel around the screen, similar to Funbook tablets, although this makes the display look a lot smaller than it actually is. It comes with a glossy screen and therefore attracts more than a fair share of fingerprints; we would recommend carrying a cloth to keep cleaning it. Apart from the screen, the tablet's front houses a 2-megapixel camera placed in one corner alongside the earpiece that sits in the centre.

The back of the Canvas Tab has a brushed aluminium finish which gives it classy looks, with a section at the top which looks removable (The back panel cannot be detached as it has been screwed on), though is not. Micromax has got rid of the cheap plastic body and equips an aluminium body at the back, which does feel better to hold than the Funbook tablets. Lodged in the back is a 5-megapixel autofocus camera at the top left corner and the speaker grill.

LG G Flex officially unveiled, with 6-inch 720p curved display

 

News: Tipping its toe in the niche curved display smartphone market along with Samsung (and its differently curved Galaxy Round), LG has released the much-anticipated G Flex smartphone in Korea only for now, with availability starting in November via all three major local carriers. No pricing has been announced for now. LG in a press note did also mention that availability in additional markets will be announced thereafter. 

Despite its low 720p resolution, the LG G Flex does seem to incorporate the current generation's best components, and can be considered a limited edition flagship from the Korean manufacturer. The Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean-based phablet is powered by a 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 (MSM 8974) processor, an Adreno 330 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 2.1-megapixel rear camera. The G Flex powered by a 3,500mAh battery, weighs 177 grams, and is 7.9mm at its thinnest, while being 8.7mm at its thickest.

As for the 6-inch curved display, LG has revealed quite a few details about it - it's claimed to be the world's largest Plastic OLED display (P-OLED), which is supposedly ultra-light, ultra-thin and flexible. It's powered by a curved OLED panel, which is also built on plastic substrates instead of glass, supposedly giving the phone better durability. The display has features Real RGB technology to provide all three sub-pixels in one pixel, thereby making it "brighter and more precise."

The curved battery, as previously announced by LG Chem, is also supposedly amongst the first of its kind, using a patented Stack & Folding technology, meant to reduce the physical stress on the battery pack in curved form, and supposedly providing better stability and performance.

Apple sold 33.8 million iPhones this summer, but faces tough competition

News: In reporting its latest quarterly earnings today, Apple announced record fourth-quarter sales of iPhones -- 33.8 million, up 26 percent from 26.9 million in the same quarter last year -- along with virtually flat iPad sales of 14.1 million this quarter, up from 14 million last year. During the same period, arch-rival Samsung, whichjust reported its earnings last Thursday, sold 86 million smartphones, though Samsung's lineup has far more models than Apple's, including entry-level versions that don't compete directly with the iPhone. Samsung is facing its own challenges at the top of its range, and sold just 16 million of its flagship Galaxy S4 during the period, according to estimates. Apple continued to lead the tablet market, selling 14.1 million iPads in the quarter, compared to Samsung's 10.5 million -- though Samsung's tablet sales doubled from last year.

Apple earned $7.5 billion, on revenue of $37.5 billion. The quarterly earnings didn't include the iPad mini with Retina display or iPad Air, which were announced last week, and only included one week's worth of sales for the latest iPhones, the 5c and 5s, which Apple previously stated sold 9 million units during their first three days on the market. Apple is expected to provide some projections about sales for the new models in its quarterly earnings call, scheduled for later today.

Motorola's 'Project Ara' modular smartphone setup switches out hardware like apps

News: We were intrigued by the Phonebloks concept phone that teased the ability to switch out a handset's components the way most users change ringtones, and now Motorola is putting its resources behind it. In what Motorola calls Project Ara, the advanced Technology and Products group is working with Phonebloks creator Dave Hakkens on an "endoskeleton (endo) and modules." Announced this evening on the company blog by Paul Eremenko, the company says it's already "done deep technical work" and is opening the process up to the community and volunteers (aka Ara Scouts, sign up here) to begin designing hardware modules. Its stated goal is to do for hardware what it says Android has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines."

Latest Tokyoflash watch makes telling time 'cryptic' for $170

News:  It wouldn't be a limited edition Tokyoflash watch if it weren't hard to read, right? The company's latest timepiece, the Kisai Xtal, follows that time-honored (get it?) tradition with a design that goes heavy on the styling -- it's described as being "crystalline shaped" -- and an interface that's made to be intentionally confusing to the uninitiated. Don't worry though, that "cryptic time" mode's merely an alternate display option on the stainless steel watch, which comes in either gold or black, and can easily be set to standard time. The Xtal's also USB-rechargeable and rated for up to two months on a single charge, so you won't have to use the included screw driver to pry out its tiny cell anytime soon. Like most Tokyoflash watch debuts, it's set to launch at a discounted price, making it $140 for a 48-hour period. Miss that initial window and you'll have to shell out $170 for the privilege of not being able to tell time at a glance.

Sponsored by ARM, which certainly has a vested interest in the matter, the 32-page paper states that the industry is at last catching on to the idea of connected devices after more than a decade of slow progress. After surveying 779 senior business leaders from 19 different industries around the world, the Economist revealed that a staggering 75 percent of businesses are already exploring the space. In fact, only 6 percent of those interviewed think of it as hype, and 94 percent believe IoT will have a significant impact in the next three years.

However, the IoT phenomenon still has a long way to go before widespread consumer adoption takes hold. Most businesses are still just experimenting with IoT either in research or internal operations and the "internet of things" mantra remains laced with jargon that might not sell well to the general public. The report also notes the dearth of IoT-skilled workers, a general lack of investment and the need for open standards before more consumers can embrace it.

This Week’s Apple Rumors, Ranked From Dumbest to Most Plausible

Each week, there are dozens of Apple rumors, reports, and patent filings that hint at what’s coming out of Cupertino next. Some are legit, but most are totally bogus. This week, much of what we’ve been hearing for the past few months was either validated or debunked at Apple’s October media event. But of course, we’re always wondering what’s next out of Cupertino. So we’ve parsed the week’s rumors, ranking them in order from “utterly ridiculous” to “duh, of course.” First up…

VERY DOUBTFUL: iPhone 6 This Summer, iWatch in the Works
Gene Munster, fierce proponent of Apple’s rumored television set issued a set of predictions for the company’s next year. Firstly, Munster predicts Apple’s iPhone 6 will launch in the summer with a larger display, and it’ll be a “blockbuster.” He also predicts a computerized iWatch is being developed. There’s been a lot of speculation that Apple’s next iPhone will feature a larger display, but it seems that Apple has switched to a fall launch schedule for the iPhone. As for the iWatch, yeah, there’s definitely some wearables action going on inside Apple research labs, but who knows when or how it’ll actually come to fruition. Here’s another theory: Maybe the iPhone 6 IS Apple’s television. Dun dun dunnnn.

DON’T COUNT ON IT: 65-inch Apple Television Coming in 2014
We’ve been hearing the whispers for years now, but still no Apple television has emerged from the shadows. Advanced Research analyst Masahiko Ishino says it’s on the way though: According to his sources, Apple is deciding on specifications of the 4K set. He said it would feature a “frameless” design, be available in 55- and 65-inch models, and fall in the $1,500 to $2,500 price range. It certainly seems like Apple will be getting into the 4K game now that its Mac Pro, out in December, is 4K capable. But it seems more likely to us — for now at least — that Apple may go the 4K Thunderbolt display route before it ventures into TV land. 

ASK AGAIN LATER: Apple Patent Uses Human Recognition to Personalize Content
A patent application published Thursday describes how Apple could use our increasingly powerful mobile devices to sense a person’s physical features and customize content using that information. This would potentially aid in the privacy of content consumption, while making it simpler and safer. Basically, the concept assigns profiles and privileges to the different types of people that enter a room, or stand in front of a display — it would recognize a child versus an adult versus an elderly person, for example. If you, an adult, are watching an R-rated movie and it detects that a child has walked in the room, it would automatically halt movie playback until the child leaves, for example. You could also log in to devices using this tech. The idea certainly seems feasible, but such technology could be implemented a number of ways, and may still be a few years off (if Apple did decide to use this technology in the first place). 

ASK AGAIN LATER: Apple Working on iPad Keyboards
It didn’t surface at Apple’s media event this week, but Apple has reportedly been thinking about creating its own iPad keyboard. The report stresses that the only thing glimpsed thus far have been prototypes. iPad and tablet-specific keyboards are fairly popular accessories for those looking to do more than just casual word-processing on their mobile machines. If Apple made its own, while not a novel idea, it would certainly be a moneymaking one. Perhaps we’ll see Apple-made iPad keyboards by the time the holidays roll around…or maybe Apple will just continue to let third-party 

manufacturers control that realm.

SIGNS POINT TO YES: iPad Mini Supplies to Be ‘Ridiculously’ Constrained
That pixel-packed Retina display comes at a price. Every time Apple has released a new Retina display product, supplies have been tight during launch time. The new iPad mini with Retina display will reportedly be no exception. IHS analyst Rhoda Alexander says Retina iPad mini numbers will be “ridiculously tight” when it’s set to debut this November.
