Metal-backed iPhone 5 rumor rides again


A third-party metal backing for the iPhone 4/4S.

Stop me if you've heard this one before: A new rumor says the next iPhone is getting a big dose of metal on its backside.

Citing "a close source," Boy Genius Report today posted a smattering of features bound for Apple's next big iPhone, which it says is due next Fall.

On top of that list is an entirely new physical construction that's a mix of aluminum on the back and a "rubber or plastic material" along the sides that will bridge the front and back of the device.

The rubber material, which BGR likens in feeling to Apple's first-party iPhone bumper cases, lets the outside band continue to serve as an antenna, as opposed to Apple having to place a plastic strip on the back of the phone as it does with the wireless antennas on the iPad and iPod Touch.

This, of course, isn't the first mention of Apple considering a metal back for a future iPhone. Citing an anonymous source from Foxconn, a 9to5Mac report in March said Apple was cooking up a model with a flat metal back. Kindle Fire Gets Early Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Port (Video)

It looks like Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet has been given an early port of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is described as pre-alpha, the build was put together by developer JackpotClavin from the XDA Developers.

Have a look at the video of it in action below, which shows Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Amazon Kindle Fire, a number of things aren’t working at the moment, although we suspect it won’t be long before a full working version of ICS is available for the Kindle Fire.

Thuderbolt Headed To PCs Next April

According to a recent report by Digitimes, Itel’s Thunderbolt technology, which is only available on Apple devices at the moment, is headed to PCs ion April of next year.

Intel teamed up with Apple to develop the technology and it launched with the new iMacs this year, and now it looks like it is headed to PCs, and will be available to a range of PC manufacturers.

LG Announces Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update For Existing Devices

LG has announced some details of when it will be releasing the latest version of Google’s mobile OS, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to its existing range of smartphones.

LG will start updating various devices from the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2012, and some of the devices to get the update include the LG Optimus LTE, Prada phone by LG 3.0, the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Sol, the LG my Touch Q and the LG Eclipse.

Sony’s PS Vita Launches In Japan

Sony’s PS Vita went on sale in Japan on Saturday, and it looks like the new PS Vita could already be a hit in Japan amongst gamers, as we heard last week that pre-orders of the device had been sold out.

As a reminder, the PlayStation Vita comes with a 5 inch multi-touch OLED display, plus a multi-touch pad on the back, there are also two analog sticks on the front, a front and rear camera.

Asus Transformer Prime Hits The UK 12th of January

Last week Asus announced that their new NVIDIA Tegra 3 Android tablet, the Asus Transformer Prime was now available to pre-order here in the UK, although there were no details on when the device would actually land in the stores.

According to ther guys over at Euro Droid it looks like the Transformer Prime will be available in the UK from the 12th of January 2012, as one retailer has now listed this date as the delivery date for pre orders.

Ferrite Interactive Liquid Sculpture (video)

A new gadget is looking to make the jump from concept to manufacture over on the Kickstarter website this month called, the Ferrite Interactive Liquid Sculpture.
