Don’t Be Silly. Lock Down and Encrypt Your Smartphone

Your smartphone is your most portable computer. It’s also a treasure trove of personal information. You wouldn’t leave your laptop unlocked in public, so why leave your phone unprotected? Lock up that data and encrypt it.

Social media, budgeting and finance apps, photos, address book, and email — they’re all filled with details about you and the people you know. Yet for some reason a third of smartphone users in the U.S. still don’t bother setting up password security on their phones. It’s a shame because using a four-digit pin or a pattern lock is one of the easiest ways to keep thieves out of your phone. Trust us, the person that finds your phone in the back of a cab or swipes it from your open bag while you’re on the bus isn’t a criminal mastermind. On the other hand, they will be able to figure out from your emails when you’ll be on vacation and what time you leave for work.

FCC officials said that in 2012 smartphone theft increased from 8 percent to 42 percent in New York City over a 10 year period. The agency suggested a system where you call your carrier to brick your phone as soon as its stolen to reduce identity theft. But most people who lose their smartphones spend at least some time retracing their steps in the hopes of, you know, finding it. In fact, having your carrier enable such a scorched earth protocol kind of renders tracking services like Apple’s ‘Find My iPhone,’ obsolete.

If your phone does fall into the hands of the smarter-than-average thief, encrypting the contents will add an extra level of security that could mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and dealing with various agencies trying to restore your identity. Android’s encryption feature requires a passcode entered into the phone every time it’s powered back on. It can also protect any SD cards you use with your Android phone. To turn on encryption, navigate to Settings > Security. The only downside is that whenever you do turn on your phone with encryption, it’ll take an hour to decipher all your information.

With iOS, just having a passcode turned on on your phone encrypts your information. But if you’re looking for the even more protection, you can have your phone delete all its content if the passcode is entered incorrectly 10 times in a row. Head to Settings > General > Passcode Lock. Scroll to the bottom and turn on Erase Data. Note that once your phone is erased, you’ll no longer be able to use Find My Phone to track its location. But if your personal information is more precious than a piece of hardware (which it should be), this is a great way to protect your identity.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 shambles its way to Android devices worldwide

Plants vs Zombies 2 shambles its way to Android
News: After brief test runs in Australia and New Zealand, EA and PopCap have releasedPlants vs. Zombies 2 for Android users worldwide. The new version is virtually identical to the iOS game released this summer, letting players fend off the undead hordes on both phones and tablets. The biggest change (apart from the platform) is a switch from Apple's Game Center to Google Play Game Services for tracking achievements and leaderboards. As before, PvZ2 is free to download -- gamers only pay if they want a fast track to victory. If you're eager to plant some Bonk Choy on your Galaxy Note, you can grab the Android port through the source link.

BBM for Android and iOS notches more than 10 million downloads in 24 hours

DNP BBM 10 million downloads
NewsBy the looks of BlackBerry's stats, millions were not only unfazed by BBM's launch hiccup on Android and iOS, but were also excited to get the app. The company formerly known as RIM says that BBM has been downloaded more than 10 million times within 24 hours since its release on the platforms. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean there are now 10 million devices out there sending and receiving BlackBerry-flavored messages: a boatload of people, including this editor, are still waiting for activation emails before they can even take it for a spin. BBM Video, Voice and Channels haven't made it to the application just yet, but they -- along with other features -- are still on the roadmap. Here's hoping the company's servers can continue handling the onslaught of users.

Yahoo Screen for iOS now supports AirPlay and live video broadcasts

Yahoo Screen for iOS now supports AirPlay and live video broadcasts
The Yahoo Screen application is still a relatively young one, but it's never too early to start adding more features to it. With this in mind, Yahoo revealed today that it's bringing AirPlay compatibility to the app, making it easy for viewers to stream content on their television set -- all while being able to use the iOS device to browse other videos and select what to play next. The refreshed Screen app now also supports real-time broadcasts (which is planned to be used for a variety of live events), and can push notification alerts during breaking news that Yahoo thinks "you should know about." Now, about that Android app...

iOS 7 review

 IOS7-635.jpg
The changes to Apple's iOS software became apparent as I drove to the headquarters of the company's rival, Google. As I navigated using Apple's mapping app, I noticed one of my favorite attributes was missing: the directions for each next turn presented in green boxes that resemble highway signs.
Many of the changes in Apple's operating system for mobile devices are cosmetic. Gone are three-dimensional icons that mimic real-world counterparts, such as a magazine rack for the Newsstand app. They are replaced by larger, two-dimensional icons sporting abstract designs and pastel colors. Apple also extended that new look to many of its apps. In Maps, the green boxes are replaced with solid white across the top.
It didn't take long to realize that deeper down, the new iOS 7 software is the same as the one I've come to know.
The new software does have several functional improvements, but those take time to stumble upon. The good news is that even if you never discover them, you can still use your device the way you did before. The free update is available starting Wednesday.
I'm covering the features specific to Apple's new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in a separate review. This one is about whether it makes sense to upgrade to iOS 7 on your existing iPhone or iPad.

Flickr app gains auto-upload feature in iOS 7 update

Flickr app gains autoupload feature in iOS 7 update
With several recent major updates including a grid UI and filters, Flickr is far from languishing in Yahoo's hands. Another refresh has just arrived for iOS 7, bringing automatic uploading from your camera roll to its servers at full resolution -- with sharing set to private by default. You'll also get automatic photo straightening using the Flickr editor, and Yahoo says that it's resolved Google sign-in issues, making sure "it doesn't happen again." If you're worried about clogging up your Flickr storage with multi-megapixel iPhone photos, fret not -- you'll still get a free terabyte.

Twitter announces Twitter Alerts for SMS and push notifications during emergencies

Twitter announces Twitter Alerts for SMS and push notifications during emergencies
We just saw Twitter broaden its use of push notifications for tweets it thinks you might find interesting, and the social network is now also expanding their use for a more serious matter. The company has just announced a new Twitter Alerts feature, which it says will deliver "accurate information from credible organizations" during an emergency or natural disaster. To ensure you don't miss them, those alerts will be delivered via SMS in addition to a push notification on Android or iOS, and you won't be getting notifications from just anyone who wants to send them. At launch, only a hundred odd NGOs and governmental agencies in the U.S., Japan and Korea are able to send the alerts, although Twitter says it will be expanding that to include organizations in other countries. You can sign up to receive the alerts by going to an organization's Alerts setup page; just add "/alerts" at the end of its Twitter URL, or find it on Twitter's list of participating organizations.

Sweden's Com Hem launches TiVo soon, will offer Netflix in December

Sweden's Com Hem launches TiVo soon, will offer Netflix in December
It appears the tests of an IPTV-ready TiVo on Sweden's Com Hem service went well, as the provider is officially launching service September 30th. It's also built a few new service packages around the three tuner, 1TB HDD-equipped DVR, with the TiVo Max option offering about 80 channels and TiVo Combo Max bundling internet and phone service. Another part of some of the TiVo packages is a TiVoToGo offering that let's users stream several live TV channels and video on-demand to other devices, along with DVR scheduling and remote control features from the iOS app. The other juicy detail is that, like Virgin Media in the UK and Google Fiber in the US, Com Hem will allow the Netflix app on its set-top boxes. The Netflix feature is expected to launch on its TiVos in December, and we figure there will be plenty of customers ready, with a claimed 45,000 already preregistered for the new boxes since May 15th.

Line messaging app update adds distinctly Vine-ish Snap Movie feature

Line messaging app update adds distinctly Vineish Snap Movie feature
Line is all about stickers. Or adorable mascots. Or stickers of said adorable mascots. But this time around, it's looking to tap into that rich Vine vein of short video-clip sharing. Initially on iOS (but Android will get the feature soon), you can now craft a 4-10 second short, with the ability to add your own choice of music in the background. The Snap Movie (that's what Line's calling it) will then play, on loop, forever, on your own timeline within the app. The update also expands users' photo and video-sharing capacity too and you can now make up to 100 albums (each housing 100 photos). If you're not exactly sure how those mini-videos are going to work, Line's been kind enough to offer up a free tutorial -- and check out a Line-sanctioned video example after the break.

iMessage unofficially comes to Android, needs a big health warning (update: pulled)

DNP iMessage for Android sounds like a dream come true, but you shouldn't trust it
If there's one thing to be learned from Apple's mobile services, it's that they'll almost certainly never be supported on rival platforms. However, that doesn't stop third-party developers from engineering their own techniques in order to break into Apple's walled garden. A case in point: Android developer Daniel Zweigart, who recently launched a Google Play app called iMessage Chat, providing users of Google's mobile OS with a way to communicate with iOS and Mac OS device owners via Apple's proprietary messaging protocol. Some have reported problems getting the app to run, while others claim it works as advertised -- and Zweigart has even gone to the trouble of emulating Apple's old iOS 6 user interface to make them feel right at home. You might think that it sounds too good to be true, and you could be right.

In order to deliver the features it claims, iMessage Chat, of course, requires a working Apple ID. Your Apple ID not only stores your personal information and payment data, it also serves as a passport for your devices and Apple's online services. It just takes one successful login by a third-party app for that data to be potentially sent to places unknown. While the developer suggests there are "no hidden costs and no ads in the application," he doesn't provide any guarantee for the safety of your Apple ID.
DNP iMessage for Android sounds like a dream come true, but you shouldn't trust it
iMessage Chat has since come to the attention of numerous third-party Apple developers, most notably Jay Freeman, a.k.a Saurik, who took apart the app to identify how it was made possible. According to Freeman, the app connects with Apple directly, but all data is first processed "on the developer's server in China." Adam Bell took that one step further and identified that the app was able to spoof iMessage requests by masquerading as a Mac Mini, while Steven Stroughton-Smith noted that it would be able to download code without the user knowing.

Because iMessage Chat relies on very specific techniques to achieve its goal, it also makes it particularly vulnerable to changes made by Apple. To that end, the company may choose to block such requests from dedicated server addresses or attempt to filter messages that contain spoofed data. Apple may also choose to file a request with Google and have the app pulled from the Play Store. In other words, not only is the Google iMessage app risky -- it may also be defunct pretty soon.

Update: Poof! The app has vanished from Google Play, so if you haven't already downloaded it, you're likely out of luck.

Sixense's Stem motion tracker may get Android and iOS support through stretch goal

Sixense Stem to get Android and iOS support if it reaches stretch goal video
Sixense has so far promised only PC compatibility for its Stem motion tracker, but the company just teased us with the prospect of a wider ecosystem. It now says that Stem's developer kit will support Android and iOS if the crowdfunded project reaches a new $700,000 stretch goal. Mobile devices linked to a Stem tracker could serve as motion controllers, virtual cameras and even head-mounted displays. As an incentive to make a pledge, Sixense is adding a pair of programmer-friendly pledge rewards: $149 gets a one-tracker bundle with no controllers, while an early five-tracker bundle has returned at a lower $299 price. Whether or not you chip in, you can watch a conceptual demo after the break.

Apple sells nine million new iPhones in three days

Image
Apple just set a new all-time record for iPhone launch sales: it reports selling nine million total iPhone 5s and 5c units this weekend, well over the 5 million of the iPhone 5 launch last year. While the company isn't breaking down sales by individual models, it notes that the initial iPhone 5s supply has already sold out. The company also mentioned that more than 200 million devices are already running iOS 7. That's the fastest software upgrade in history, according to Apple. While it's difficult to put the sales and download figures into context without directly comparable numbers from rivals, it's clear that the new devices are off to a strong start. Check out Apple's self-congratulatory release after the break.

Twitter gets pushy with notifications for recommended tweets

DNP Twitter reveals push notificationbased tailored recommendation update for Android, iOS
Twitter is one of the best ways to keep abreast of breaking news, but getting caught up on anything meaningful that happened on a given day can take hours of scrolling. To combat this, the service is now rolling out a push notification-based recommendation system that builds on @MagicRecs, the account that sends tailored content-suggestions based on who you follow. A trip to the Android and iOS settings menu is all it takes to enable (or disable) a buzz when there are favorites and retweets the platform thinks you might dig. If you can't spend all day watching your timeline but still want to stay in the loop, this could be perfect middle ground. Now if you'll excuse us, we just got word that Emergency Puppy tweeted out a new picture.

Blackberry Launches BBM Service for Android and iOS

BBM service for android and ios
